Karneval was the culmination of several months’ worth of activities that we had been involved in.
A few years ago our Grade 6-12 students were surveyed to help our schools and communities better understand the needs of our youth and to develop asset-building strategies to meet those needs. The 40 Developmental Assets are positive experiences and personal qualities that young people need to grow up healthy, caring, and responsible.
This project was born in the fall when grant money was made available to us from the school division. The goal was to look at our school and community and decide on a developmental asset that we would like to build. We decided that, because we had several children in our school whose families had immigrated to Canada, we would like to gain a greater understanding of their culture.
It is hoped that by doing this project, the students will have a greater understanding and appreciation for the students in our school that come from another culture. As well, it has given those students from other cultures an opportunity to share their background, to be proud of their heritage, and feel more accepted for who they are.
Visitors to our Folklorama had an opportunity to taste some foods from Switzerland, Germany and Belgium. Each family shared a little bit about the part of their country that they were from and the students showcased their crafts. Each class performed a dance they had learned. It was a great celebration!
We would like to thank all those who were involved in this project and helped make it such a success.
