The 40 Developmental Assets provide a common framework and common language for everyone - students, staff, families, and community - to promote positive development.

Assets are positive factors in the lives of young people that research has shown promote thriving. Some of these factors occur outside young people in their homes, schools, and communities, these are EXTERNAL ASSETS. Other factors are found within the young people, these are INTERNAL ASSETS. Within the EXTERNAL ASSETS there are 4 categories of assets:

| Support The symbol of this category says it all - its about love. Young people (and all people) need to experience love and to experience caring and support in their homes, their schools and their communities.

| Empowerment The empowerment assets are about young people feeling valued by family, by peers, at school and in the community. They are about having important things to do and knowing that they are seen as being valuable.

| Boundaries & Expectations Young people do better when there are clear boundaries, when behavioural expectations are clearly established, and when consequences are spelled out. It really helps if these are fairly consistent between home, school, and community.

| Constructive Use of Time Young people need positive, worthwhile, challenging, fun things to spend their time at; they do not usually do well when they spend a lot of time hanging around with peers with nothing to do.
